November2008nailing beams

After a break over the winter of 07-08, construction began again in April 2008. With some anticipated funding through a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, and a project manager was hired along with a laborer. This allowed for construction to continue throughout the week as well as on Saturdays. By doing this, our construction schedule was shortened considerably.

The first item of business was to open up the site and begin with the construcction of first floor walls, followed by second floor joists and sub floor. In August the roof was started with the setting of trusses and sheeting with shingles following quickly. The installation of doors and windows came as the siding went up on the building. Two additional families were picked for the 4th and 5th unit. A decision was made to push to try and get the fist two families into their homes by the end of the year since they were waiting the longest and showed promise of having the required "sweat equity" hours finished. It was quickly decided to add the third unit to the list as our third family quickly completed their hours at the site.

As we head toward Thanksgiving, we are installing the plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems and preparing for insulation and drywall. The goal for the end of the year for move-in is still possible, but has his a funding snag which set the timetable back about 3-4 weeks.
